Peter Kember, known professionally as Sonic Boom, is an English experimental musician, producer, and a pivotal figure in the development of shoegaze, space rock, and minimalist electronic music.Co-founded the influential band Spacemen 3 in 1982. Launched his solo project Sonic Boom in 1990 after the band's dissolution. Renowned for pioneering drone-based rock, heavy use of repetition, and analog synthesizers. Has released albums under Sonic Boom and other aliases like Spectrum and E.A.R. Evolved into a sought-after producer for artists like Beach House.
  • Spacemen 3 dissolved acrimoniously in 1991 due to the escalating creative and personal conflict between Kember and bandmate Jason Pierce (later of Spiritualized), stemming from differing visions and Pierce's dominance.
  • Kember's work, especially with Spacemen 3, often openly explored themes of drug use (particularly heroin) as a means to transcendence, mirroring the band's mantra 'Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To'.
  • Kember is a dedicated advocate for analog synthesizers and experimental sound manipulation, building his own unique instruments and effects units. He relocated to Portugal in the late 1990s.
  • Unexpectedly became a highly influential producer in the 2010s and 2020s, shaping the sound of acclaimed albums by Beach House ('7', 'Once Twice Melody'), Panda Bear ('Tomboy', 'Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper'), and MGMT.
  • His long-term Sonic Boom project saw a significant critical resurgence with the 2020 album 'All Things Being Equal', praised for its hypnotic, minimalist electronic pop.
