Reel 2 Real: The House Music Hitmakers

Reel 2 Real was a highly successful dance music project of the mid-1990s, primarily the collaboration between Dutch-American DJ/producer Erick Morillo and Trinidadian rapper/vocalist Mark Quashie, known as The Mad Stuntman.Formed in 1993 by producer Erick Morillo, Reel 2 Real became a global phenomenon with their infectious house tracks driven by Morillo's production and The Mad Stuntman's distinctive, energetic vocals. Their debut single 'I Like To Move It' became an instant international smash hit in 1994, dominating charts and dancefloors worldwide. Follow-up singles 'Go On Move' and 'Conway' also achieved significant success. The project effectively ended as a primary focus after Morillo shifted towards his solo career and Subliminal Records label in the late 1990s. Quashie continued sporadic musical work until his death.
  • The iconic vocalist, Mark 'The Mad Stuntman' Quashie, disappeared in 2004 while visiting Trinidad & Tobago. His body was discovered months later; he had been murdered. The crime remains officially unsolved, though theories involving robbery or disputes exist.
  • Erick Morillo faced significant legal troubles later in life related to sexual assault charges. He died by suicide in September 2020 at the age of 49, just days before a scheduled court hearing on one of the charges.
  • The instantly recognizable chant 'I Like To Move It' was initially improvised by Quashie during a studio session with Morillo. Its simplicity and energy became its defining strength.
  • The 'Reel 2 Real' name was chosen by Morillo to reflect the project's sound: 'Reel' representing the DJ/producer side (reel-to-reel tapes) and 'Real' representing the vocalist's raw energy.
  • Despite the massive success of 'I Like To Move It', neither Morillo nor Quashie initially received songwriting credits on the original release, a point of contention later rectified.
