Wild Cherry

American funk-rock band best known for the 1976 hit "Play That Funky Music".Formed in Mingo Junction, Ohio by guitarist/vocalist Robert Parissi. Achieved mainstream success with their debut single, blending rock with emerging disco and funk influences. Despite lineup changes, their signature song became a cultural phenomenon before disbanding due to declining popularity.
  • The band's name was inspired by a box of cough drops labeled "Wild Cherry" that Parissi saw in a hospital.
  • "Play That Funky Music" was written in response to audience demands at a club gig where someone shouted, "Play that funky music, white boy!"
  • The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976 and sold over 2 million copies, but subsequent albums failed commercially.
  • Parissi temporarily quit music after the band's dissolution and became a radiation therapist, later reviving Wild Cherry briefly in the 2000s with new members.
