Henri Salvador: The Joyful Voice of French Music

French singer, guitarist, comedian, and one of the pioneers of rock and roll and bossa nova in France.Henri Salvador, born in Cayenne, French Guiana, rose from humble beginnings to become a beloved icon of French popular music. His career spanned over seven decades, encompassing jazz, chanson, rock and roll, bossa nova, and children's music. He achieved massive success as a performer known for his warm baritone voice, virtuosic guitar playing (influenced by Django Reinhardt), and comedic talent. Salvador also founded his own influential record label, Disques Salvador, and composed numerous hits for himself and others.
  • His early 1958 bossa nova-inspired song "Dans mon île" is considered a direct influence on the creation of the bossa nova genre in Brazil, reportedly inspiring Antonio Carlos Jobim.
  • To experiment with the new rock and roll craze without alienating his established audience, he used the pseudonym "Henry Cording" (a pun on "enregistrement" - recording) for rockabilly tracks like "Rock and Roll mops".
  • He experienced a major career resurgence in his 80s with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful album "Chambre avec vue" (2000), produced by Benjamin Biolay and Keren Ann, winning multiple Victoires de la Musique awards.
  • He died on February 13, 2008, at his home in Paris, due to a ruptured aortic aneurysm, just months after the death of his wife, Catherine.
