Booker T. & the M.G.'s

American instrumental rhythm and blues/funk band, pivotal session group for Stax Records.Formed in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee as the house band for Stax Records. Originally Booker T. Jones (organ), Steve Cropper (guitar), Lewie Steinberg (bass), and Al Jackson Jr. (drums). Donald 'Duck' Dunn replaced Steinberg in 1965. They backed countless Stax artists like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett and recorded influential instrumental hits. Disbanded in 1971 after Stax's sale, with reunions occurring later.
  • Their iconic hit 'Green Onions' (1962) was recorded spontaneously during downtime in a session and became an instant R&B classic.
  • They were a rare integrated band in the segregated South during the 1960s, symbolizing musical unity.
  • Tragically, drummer Al Jackson Jr. was murdered during a home invasion in 1975. Bassist Donald 'Duck' Dunn died of natural causes in 2012 while on tour.
  • Won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. 'Green Onions' is inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
