Chico Buarque is a legendary Brazilian singer-songwriter, guitarist, composer, playwright, novelist, and poet, revered as one of the most important figures in Brazilian Popular Music (MPB).Born in Rio de Janeiro (1944), son of renowned historian Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. Rose to fame in the 1960s as part of the MPB movement and Tropicália. Became a powerful voice of resistance against Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985), facing censorship and exile. His career spans over 60 years, blending sophisticated melodies and lyrics with deep social commentary and Brazilian rhythms like samba. Also achieved significant acclaim as a novelist and playwright.
  • During the dictatorship, he famously used pseudonyms like 'Julinho da Adelaide' to bypass censorship and release politically charged songs.
  • His song 'Cálice' (Chalice), a powerful protest against censorship and violence co-written with Gilberto Gil, was banned for years; its title is a pun on 'Cale-se' (Shut up).
  • He spent time in exile in Italy (1969-1970) due to political pressure. Upon returning, his passport was confiscated.
  • In 2019, he controversially declined Brazil's highest cultural honor, the Order of Cultural Merit, offered by the government of Jair Bolsonaro.
  • Beyond music, he won the prestigious Camões Prize for Literature (2019) and the Jabuti Prize multiple times for his novels.
