Toto (band)

American rock band renowned for their technical proficiency, session musician roots, and multi-genre hits spanning rock, pop, R&B, and progressive rock. Formed in Los Angeles in 1977 by seasoned session musicians David Paich (keyboards, vocals) and Jeff Porcaro (drums), alongside Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals), Steve Porcaro (keyboards), David Hungate (bass), and Bobby Kimball (vocals). Toto achieved massive commercial success with albums like 'Toto IV' (1982), featuring Grammy-winning hits 'Rosanna' and 'Africa'. Despite numerous lineup changes, including the tragic deaths of Jeff Porcaro (1992) and Mike Porcaro (2015), the band has endured, touring consistently and releasing new music.
  • Members were among the most sought-after session musicians in 1970s/80s LA, playing on hundreds of hits for artists like Michael Jackson, Boz Scaggs, and Steely Dan before forming Toto.
  • Drummer Jeff Porcaro died suddenly in 1992 at age 38. The official cause was a heart attack triggered by an allergic reaction to pesticides, though recreational drug use was a contributing factor per the coroner's report.
  • The song 'Africa' experienced an unexpected massive resurgence in popularity decades later, becoming a viral internet phenomenon and leading to a popular cover by Weezer in 2018.
  • Keyboardist/vocalist David Paich took a hiatus from touring in the late 2000s due to an undisclosed illness but returned in 2020 and remains involved in writing and recording.
  • Bassist Mike Porcaro was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in 2007, forcing him to stop performing; he died from complications of the disease in 2015.
