Europe (band)

Europe (band)
Swedish hard rock/heavy metal band that achieved massive global success in the 1980s, particularly with the anthem 'The Final Countdown'. Formed in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, in 1979 under the name Force by vocalist Joey Tempest and guitarist John Norum. Won a national talent contest (Rock-SM) in 1982, leading to a record deal. Released their self-titled debut album in 1983. Achieved international superstardom with their third album, 'The Final Countdown' (1986), and its iconic title track. Experienced a decline in mainstream popularity after the late 1980s and went on hiatus in 1992. Reunited in 2003 and have since released several successful albums, maintaining a dedicated fanbase worldwide.
  • The band's original name was Force. They changed it to Europe upon winning the Rock-SM contest in 1982.
  • Their breakthrough hit, 'The Final Countdown', was initially considered too unconventional by some band members and their producer, but became a global phenomenon, reaching No. 1 in 25 countries. It was notably popular in the Soviet Union.
  • Guitarist John Norum left the band in 1986 after the release of 'The Final Countdown' due to creative differences and dissatisfaction with the band's increasingly polished direction; he was replaced by Kee Marcello. Norum rejoined for the 2003 reunion.
  • The band went on hiatus in 1992 primarily due to the declining popularity of the glam/hard rock genre and a desire to pursue solo projects. Vocalist Joey Tempest and keyboardist Mic Michaeli both released solo albums.
  • Despite the hiatus, the band members remained friends. The successful reunion in 2003 was sparked by an invitation to play 'The Final Countdown' at a New Year's Eve TV special in Sweden.
  • Europe has released six studio albums since their reunion (starting with 'Start from the Dark' in 2004), showcasing a heavier sound while retaining their melodic core, proving their longevity beyond their 80s hits.
