Men at Work
Australian new wave and rock band known for global hits in the early 1980s.Formed in Melbourne in 1979. Released debut album 'Business as Usual' (1981), which topped charts worldwide. Won Grammy Award for Best New Artist (1983). Disbanded in 1986 after two studio albums.
- Their song 'Down Under' became an unofficial Australian anthem but faced a 2009 copyright lawsuit over its flute riff, ruled to plagiarize 'Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree'. The band lost appeals in 2010.
- Flutist/saxophonist Greg Ham was found dead in 2012, with reports linking his decline to stress from the lawsuit and substance abuse. Coroner ruled accidental prescription drug overdose.
- Original drummer Jerry Speiser and bassist John Rees were fired in 1984 amid internal conflicts over finances and control, fracturing the classic lineup.
- Colin Hay later pursued a solo career and appeared in TV shows like 'Scrubs'. The band reunited briefly in 1996 and 2019 (without Ham).
