Víctor Jara

Chilean singer-songwriter, poet, theatre director, and political activist.Born into rural poverty, Jara became a leading figure in Chile's Nueva Canción movement. A member of the Communist Party, he used music to advocate for social justice. After the 1973 coup, he was arrested, tortured, and executed by Pinochet's regime, becoming a symbol of resistance.
  • Jara's hands were deliberately smashed during torture to mock his musical career before his execution.
  • He directed over 60 plays, including works by Brecht and Chekhov, while heading the theater department at Chile's Technical University.
  • His song "Te recuerdo Amanda" became an anthem for Salvador Allende's socialist government and remains iconic in Latin America.
  • In 2018, a U.S. court found former Chilean Army officer Pedro Barrientos liable for Jara's murder, ordering him to pay $28 million in damages.
