The Changing Face of Musical Notation
Introduction
“As long as notation remains a means of access to sound, or a means for individuals to make music together, it stays in the background and is never shown, never questioned. In such times of perfect harmony between musicians, notation is only an unimportant sketch that no one would think of considering as an element in itself.” That observation from Jean-Charles François points to why musicians rarely think about notation when communication is smooth. Hugo Cole adds another perspective: notations act as “barometers which register changes and fluctuations in the musical climate, reflecting the divisions and uncertainties of the age.”
For most composers and performers, notation remains invisible as long as things run smoothly. Musicians operate on the basis of shared experience and tacit knowledge that forms a common cultural background. The notation does not have to be explicit about what everyone takes for granted.
Three key strands of thinking have exposed the limitations of notation in expressing musical ideas adequately. First, in periods of great cultural upheaval—such as post-war Europe and America—artists naturally re-evaluate their materials and methods, questioning whether inherited practices serve their current needs. Second, since the early twentieth century, the rise of ethnomusicology confronted researchers with the difficulty of using Western notation to capture non-Western musical traditions. Third, the advent of electronic music forced composers to describe sonic outcomes with precision—whether for copyright protection (the composer Ussachevsky spent forty hours producing a score for a tape piece to secure its copyright), for analysis (Stockhausen’s Kontakte), or for future performances (John Cage’s Imaginary Landscape No. 5).
The most frequently cited books and articles on notation were written in the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s. As a result, comparatively little has been published about what has happened to notation in the decades since. Now that enough time has passed for reflection, evaluation, and familiarisation with those innovations, we can assess how developments of the mid-twentieth century remain relevant to current compositional practice.
The Nature of Notation
“[Our notation’s] interdependence with music is so great that in many cases where one can only understand the music through knowing the notation, one can only understand the notation through being in sympathy with the music.” S. Townsend Warner captured the circular logic that makes notation inseparable from the music it records.
A hallmark of musical notation, as with all written systems, is its selective character. Notation records what a culture, society, or individual considers noteworthy; the rest goes unnotated and, in practice, unnoticed. All such systems lag behind the spoken word. English spelling, for example, still mirrors pronunciation from five hundred years ago. Western music notation at the start of the twentieth century appeared complete: it possessed all the symbols and directives for notating the great Romantic works. But those tools proved rapidly inadequate for the explosive developments in music and musical thought during the early twentieth century.

Prior to the twentieth century, music notation served four functions: preserving music; communicating with performers; internal dialogue between composer and the written score; and shaping musical conception itself. The last of these receives particular attention here, because notation affects not only how composers conceive of music but also how an entire musical culture develops, “so that the aural image of a musical work in every epoch is characteristically related to its visual configuration.”
Notation is not something added at the end of the compositional act—as for Mozart or Beethoven. It influences the very way we think and write music. Just as Schoenberg’s emancipation of dissonance and the general flight from tonality after the two world wars challenged inherited conventions (despite those calls from young composers like Boulez and Stockhausen to rewrite tradition), so tonal notation was bound to prove unfit for non-tonal music. Karkoschka pointed out that notational possibilities shape not only individual creativity but the entire musical community: the characteristic sound of each epoch relates directly to its visual markings.
Why Change?
“Musical notation is always in a state of change, constantly subjected to pressures which cause it to embrace innovations, to become more explicit, more flexible, or otherwise more suited to the prevailing musical style.” Richard Rastall sets the stage for understanding the dramatic shifts of the twentieth century.
Earle Brown adds: “It is well known that notation has been a constant difficulty and frustration to composers, since it is a relatively inefficient and incomplete transcription of the infinite totality which a composer traditionally ‘hears,’ and it should not be at all surprising that it continues to evolve.”
Hugo Cole isolated seven main factors driving those mid-century transformations:
- Financial incentives: indeterminate notations appealed to performers, who found active collaboration more engaging than functioning as mere executants. Composers needed performers to win others to their side.
- Shift in focus: attention moved from pitch and duration toward other aspects of sound, leaving the traditional primes sometimes unspecified.
- Communication advances: non-linearity and multi-layered use of materials became possible; scores no longer existed only on flush‑printed pages.
- Declining need for universal notation language: recordings now sufficed for establishing reputations, eliminating the need for a single, generally readable system.
- New functions for the score: notation lost its primary preserving role and could instead serve interpretation, graphic appeal, or construction of works in real time.
- Gate‑keeping requirement: challenging notation protected pieces from uninterested performers. Score investment filtered those willing to devote the necessary time.
- Improvements in reproductions: facsimile reproduction of detailed or graphic scores allowed dissemination that older printing technologies delayed.
These causes overlap; they prompted two major directions in up‑systemizing notation after 1950.
Cole also identifies two broader prior pressures from ethnomusicology and electronic music. Sound-making previously left unnotated saw new attention, including more precise dynamic definitions, controlled timbral changes, pitch alterations (through microtones or detailed glissandi), and specification of performers’ stage locations, among other details. As Cole suggests, composers have lost faith in performers, so any hint of ambiguity must be eliminated—the work no longer demands “interpretation,” only “execution.” Naturally, with such demands for precision, room for interpretation dwindles further. This drive led notation within the established traditional system toward ever-greater exactness. David Behrman observed that “the performer's 'musicianship' came to outlive its usefulness. The composer no longer expected him to read between the lines of his score. […] To make up for the suppression of interpretation, the specifications grew more numerous and exacting than ever before.” Additional factors included composers expecting performers to invest far more rehearsal time and the dramatic expansion of playing techniques within a brief period, with no standardized practices for notating effects such as playing directly on piano strings, striking instrument bodies with the bow, or producing quarter-tones.
Notation thus entered a vicious cycle: on one side, it sought to eliminate any room for (mis)interpretation of the composer’s intentions, reinforcing culture’s veneration for the urtext, the original, the authentic—explaining why composers became so eager to notate every possible musical aspect. On the other side, pursuing extreme control risked crafting notation so unambiguous that it requires no explanation and leaves no room for questioning. Yet Earle Brown cautioned: “all notation is basically 'only suggestive' but once it arrives at the extreme point of fragmentation and fractioning that it has, it becomes a statistical accuracy and the question arises, Is there not a more functional and less self-defeating and more realistic graphic suggestion? There is not, of course, if one insists that any degree of fragmentation of duration is accurately performable, and it may be, but if it is not, the development of precision in notation has contradicted itself.” This quest for a so-called perfect notation became the avant-garde’s holy grail, but due to notation’s inherent nature—as Brown’s quote illustrates—it remains intrinsically unattainable.
Many composers do not even desire such perfection, as its impacts would cripple creativity for both composers and performers while largely reducing the need for expression: “notation's ambiguities are its saving grace.” These highly determinate notations met protests from performers, composers, and publishers alike. Publishers faced increased costs and had to reinvent typesetting with each new set of symbols, hindering standardization despite well-intentioned efforts like the 1974 International Conference on New Musical Notation and the Index of New Musical Notations. Still, experimental composers’ indeterminate notations sometimes represent a conscious—or unconscious—reaction against extreme precision and determinacy.
3.2.2 The Experimental Composers: Less Control
Earle Brown noted, “We do have a 'crisis of consciousness,' and it has changed the nature of the artist's relationship to his work and the relationship of the work to a performer, reader, viewer, or listener. The 'loosening' of notational controls and the conscious introduction of ambiguity and spontaneity in performance were, for me, a way to deal with this new situation […].” Experimental composers rejected the excessive precision described above and instead embraced intentional ambiguity and various forms of indeterminacy—affecting pitches (e.g., Feldman’s Intersections), rhythms (e.g., Feldman’s De Kooning), structures (e.g., Cage’s Concerto for Piano), instrumentation (e.g., Cage’s Five), the entire soundscape (e.g., Cage’s Imaginary Landscape No.4), and welcoming all acoustic phenomena into music’s vocabulary. This shift also expanded performers’ responsibility for the final sonic result through choices of material, improvisation, use of external sounds, and unpredictable circumstances (e.g., Wolff’s Duo for Pianists).
These new musical concepts demanded corresponding material developments in notation. Composers became acutely aware that traditional notation could barely represent anything beyond nineteenth-century ideals, while also recognizing the written medium’s potential to communicate novel music-making approaches. Radical ideological shifts thus required not merely alterations within existing notation but full-scale systemic changes. Traditional notation and symbols were sometimes abandoned entirely; implicit notations increased sharply, as these scores better conveyed the freedom offered to performers and acknowledged their extended contributions.
Unsurprisingly, New York’s experimental composers of the 1950s and 1960s—Cage, Feldman, Wolff, Brown—moved among leading abstract expressionist painters like De Kooning, Rauschenberg, Guston, Rothko, and Pollock. These composers surely valued notation’s graphic nature, focusing intently on this aspect. In doing so, they produced visually striking scores closely resembling paintings, to the point that galleries exhibited musical scores and Stockhausen spoke of “music for reading,” made possible by “emancipation of the graphic from the acoustic element.” The central distinction between avant-garde and experimental composers lies in their goals: the former, using an expanded vocabulary of notational devices within traditional notation, persisted in prescribing the sonic outcome with ever-increasing accuracy; the latter notated “the activities associated with the compositional process rather than the sonic remnants of that process.” This principle echoes in statements from seminal experimental composers and in the scores themselves, as well as in scholarly work on experimental music. Nonetheless, this reduction of control does not diminish sophistication. Earle Brown argued these developments would certainly prove an “addition, rather than a subtraction, of musical possibilities and in no sense a negative development.”
4. Music Notation Today
Yet it is intriguing that, following the intense experimentation of the mid-twentieth century, notation began moving away from extreme forms by the 1970s and 1980s. It shifted toward a more refined traditional Western notation, now embellished with new symbols, freedoms (frequent time-signature changes, once rare before Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, are now expected from any competent performer), and space for evolution. According to one source, “current notational advances have stagnated while the previous half-century's advances were rejected.” Both Rastall and Cole predicted decades ago that notational developments would subside, giving rise to a flexible traditional notation more versatile than before and better suited to future composers’ needs.
Another significant impact of these developments is that many once-unplayable, non-musical, or instrument-damaging techniques have entered standard notation language; performers no longer find such innovations shocking. Many of these techniques now form an essential part of conservatory training, enriching students’ sound-production vocabulary and enabling them to perform contemporary works. Standardization, however, is not necessarily positive. While music engravers, publishers, and software developers may welcome a uniform practice—not just symbol but system standardization—variety and abundance are crucial in creative activities. Standardizing notation standardizes thinking and limits creativity: “creative people are not immune to their tools' limitations.”
Several factors may explain the stagnation of experimentation with graphic notation. Notation may be inadequate for certain precision—timbral nuances, orchestration, or synchronization. The 1950s–60s outburst might have been a unique historical moment, irrelevant to current practice. Alternatively, graphic scores may have been suppressed by institutions—publishers, engravers, copyists, notation software, conservatories—where they pose more problems than solutions. No single cause fully explains the near-universal retreat from such notations. Indeterminate notations inherently cannot match the precision of traditional notation. Composers seeking exact sonic outcomes are better served by a system in which potential performers have invested years of training.
The remarkable variety of scores from the 1950s and 1960s resulted from particular people at specific times and places, each artist exploring their personal views on notation and music against a backdrop of cultural influences—responding by pushing graphic possibilities to extremes, as in Earle Brown’s December 1952. Key differences separate these changes from earlier pivotal moments in notation history (discussed previously). Earlier transformations moved notation forward along a common trajectory; everyone developed a shared symbol system. Twentieth-century developments ran both longitudinally (advancing within the system) and latitudinally (creating outright new systems). Longitudinal advances—matched to the avant-garde approach—involved inventing symbols for new techniques, finer nuances, and better execution cues. Latitudinal innovations, however, could not be assimilated or developed similarly because of their very nature. The output of experimental composers from these decades shares little in common other than questioning and discarding, to varying degrees, previously taken-for-granted aspects of notation. Graphic scores are deeply individual: even using a notation similar to Feldman’s Projection II results today not in “a piece in graphic notation” but in “a piece using Feldman’s notation.”
Yet graphic notation has achieved some longitudinal growth. Composers now have photocopiers and scanners, enabling reproduction of any notation on paper. With improved photographic techniques, more complex pictorial scores—collage-based works like Jennifer Walshe’s Tentative for Bed of Soft—or processed photograph scores become possible. Over the last twenty years, easily available color printing has integrated color into graphic scores; even more recent developments in drawing and design software expand possibilities, as seen in Theresa Sauer’s Parthenogenesis. These are ways contemporary composers have indeed continued this tradition, and new technological tools will likely sustain it. Notation software has both hampered and fostered what appears to be a current “resurgence of interest in both writing and reading graphic scores.”
Notational software has most obviously exercised an effect of inhibition, placing barriers in the way of disseminating ideas and music that do not fit within the (almost exclusively) nineteenth‑century framework around which these programs were built. Just as music notation not only lets us preserve and communicate but also shapes the terms in which we imagine music, notational software “suggests – demands – ways of working with a score, even of conceptualizing it.” Because such software is largely confined to nineteenth‑century ideals, it “may injure subsequent generations of composers.”
Of course, notational software remains merely a tool; one must learn to work around its constraints to use it efficiently and with integrity. Yet the extreme inconvenience of notating non‑standard devices through such software stifles compositional fluency. Even when composers are not working directly at the computer, they are partly composing with the program in mind, since ultimately they (or someone else) will need to typeset their manuscripts to obtain benefits such as extracting parts.
Meanwhile, “there has been a backlash of composers who treasure the handwritten manuscript and remain resistant to the depersonalization of digitally manufactured scores.” Jane Alden finds it telling that this recent renewal of interest in graphic scores coincides with easier access to notational software: “The pen seems to have renewed appeal as a greater tool as our lives become ever more digitised.”
Last, as music education becomes ever more institutionalised, graphic notations create difficulties when training performers to achieve the technical competence required for the Western canon. Additionally, music students — after spending much of their schooling mastering conventional notation — are generally unreceptive toward composers who wish to “teach” novel symbols or playing techniques, or who abandon traditional notation altogether. Composition students must rely on ordinary notation to win over performers and to acquire grounding in topics like counterpoint, harmony, and orchestration. Because they need to produce high‑quality printed scores without access to a publisher or professional engraver, they end up thinking within the very constraints imposed by the software (as already described).
5. CONCLUSION
Notation today has gained considerable agility and versatility, thanks largely to developments that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Composers now have the liberty to select from many ways of committing to paper what they want to hear, and the technological achievements of the twenty‑first century give them a remarkable panoply of tools for reaching the most striking outcomes.
The return of graphic scores is evident in volumes such as SoundVisions (Möller, Shim, and Stäbler, PFAU 2005) or Theresa Sauer’s Notations 21. Sauer observes that contributors to Notations 21 relate to notation differently because they grapple “with new and very powerful political and social issues, ideas of freedom and our environment on a larger and more global scale.” She adds, “these new, daring musical manifestations are also ideas and philosophies put to paper that should be heard and understood and brought into mainstream consciousness. It is the future of music and art together.”
Speculating on the future of notation — or any artistic domain — is exceedingly difficult, perhaps impossible; we cannot evaluate today’s notation from the vantage point of musicians a century from now. Still, Western music occupies a distinct historical, social, and cultural context from which it is hard to break free entirely. For composers to adopt whatever notational means best fit the music they wish to create (rather than bending their music to fit the notation), shifts must occur in how musicians are trained, far more flexible notational software must be developed, and the necessity of graphic notations must be understood.
Embracing the essential role of notation in artistic expression is the sine qua non for the revival of graphic notation and for releasing the graphic score from the limitations of traditional Western notation. Crucially, people in the music industry who are not directly involved in creative work — publishers, engravers, and others — need to grasp why such a multiplicity of notational forms is necessary. Whether directly or indirectly, they can otherwise stifle the fluidity of composers’ expression. Notation is integral to how we conceive music and ought to be treated — and taught — as a component as vital as counterpoint or harmony.
The anecdote about Cornelius Cardew is instructive: he required his students to begin composing on a completely blank sheet of paper. If they felt a staff and notes were needed, of course that was permitted; if they felt they could devise an entirely new way of writing what they imagined, that was also an option. Compared with educational institutions that confine their students to notational software built around nineteenth‑century musical ideals, Cardew’s strategy appears far healthier — one that foregrounds the written score in the creative process and seeks to expand musicians’ awareness and identity through their interaction with the score.
