Supercell: The Pioneering Vocaloid Collective

Supercell is a prominent Japanese musical collective, originally formed by composer Ryo and revolving around the use of the Vocaloid voice synthesizer software, most famously featuring Hatsune Miku. Supercell began as an online doujin circle in 2007, founded by composer and lyricist Ryo. They gained massive popularity with the Vocaloid song "Melt" featuring Hatsune Miku. Signing with Sony Music Japan in 2009, they released their major debut album "Supercell" featuring guest vocalist Koeda. The collective disbanded in 2013 but unexpectedly reunited in 2016. Supercell is known for its anime tie-ins and shifting lineup of supporting musicians and guest singers.
  • The founding core member, known only by the pseudonym "Ryo", remains anonymous, a common practice in the early doujin Vocaloid scene. His real identity and appearance are not publicly known.
  • Supercell's breakout song "Melt" became a viral phenomenon on Nico Nico Douga, propelling Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid music into mainstream Japanese consciousness.
  • After signing with Sony, Supercell shifted from solely using Vocaloids to featuring human guest vocalists like Nagae Nanaka and Chelly (from EGOIST). Nagae Nanaka left the group in 2011.
  • Supercell is closely linked to the anime industry. Their songs are featured in series like "Bakemonogatari" ("Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari"), "Black Rock Shooter" (OVA and TV series), "The Garden of Words", and "Guilty Crown" (where vocalist Chelly formed the unit EGOIST).
  • The group announced their disbandment in 2013, surprising fans. Their reunion in 2016 was equally unexpected, leading to new releases including the album "Today Is A Beautiful Day".
  • While Ryo is the consistent creative force, Supercell functions as a collective, collaborating with various illustrators, animators (like Yutaka Yamamoto), and guest musicians.
