Apocalyptica: Masters of Cello Metal
Finnish symphonic metal band renowned for using cellos as their primary instruments.
Formed in 1993 by four classically trained cellists from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Initially gained fame for cello renditions of Metallica songs. Transitioned to composing original music blending classical, metal, and rock elements. Known for intense live performances and collaborations with renowned rock and metal vocalists.
- The founding members Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen met while studying at the prestigious Sibelius Academy.
- Their debut album, 'Plays Metallica by Four Cellos' (1996), recorded in just three days, became a surprise cult hit, proving the cello's power in heavy music.
- Max Lilja departed in 2002, and Antero Manninen left in 1999 (though he returned as a session/touring member later). Perttu Kivilaakso joined in 1999, solidifying the core trio of Toppinen, Lötjönen, and Kivilaakso. Mikko Sirén joined as their permanent drummer in 2003.
- A significant shift occurred with their third album, 'Cult' (2000), which featured mostly original compositions, marking their evolution beyond covers.
- They frequently collaborate with vocalists; notable guests include Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Till Lindemann (Rammstein), Adam Gontier (Three Days Grace), and Ville Valo (HIM).
- Their unique sound earned them a Grammy nomination in 2018 for Best Metal Performance for the song "Shadowmaker" featuring Franky Perez.
