Genesis (band)

English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, known for pioneering progressive rock and evolving into global pop-rock superstars.Formed in 1967 by Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, and Chris Stewart. Achieved cult status in the 1970s with theatrical prog-rock epics, then transitioned to pop dominance after Phil Collins became lead vocalist. Sold over 150 million records worldwide. Inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2010).
  • Original guitarist Anthony Phillips quit in 1970 due to stage fright, replaced by Steve Hackett. Drummer Phil Collins initially joined without auditioning.
  • Peter Gabriel's abrupt 1975 departure (mid-tour) caused turmoil; Collins reluctantly became lead singer after months of auditions failed.
  • Steve Hackett left in 1977, reducing Genesis to a trio (Banks/Rutherford/Collins) and accelerating their shift toward pop.
  • Phil Collins' 1996 exit led to a critically panned final album with replacement Ray Wilson; Collins returned for reunion tours in 2007 and 2021.
  • The band's 1974 concept album 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' featured surreal NYC-inspired imagery and a 23-minute closing track, nearly bankrupting them due to elaborate stage production.
