The Rembrandts: American Pop-Rock Duo
American pop-rock duo best known for the iconic theme song "I'll Be There for You" from the TV show Friends.Formed in Los Angeles in 1989 by singer-songwriters and guitarists Phil Solem (formerly of The Ravyns) and Danny Wilde (formerly of Great Buildings). They achieved mainstream success with their self-titled debut album (1990), featuring the hit "Just the Way It Is, Baby". Their greatest fame came from recording the Friends theme song for its second season onwards, leading to massive global airplay. They released several albums but struggled to replicate the success outside of the Friends theme. The duo disbanded in 2020.
- The Friends theme song "I'll Be There for You" was originally a last-minute request. They wrote and recorded a short version in under a day for the show's first season finale montage. Its popularity exploded, leading to a full-length version for Season 2 and inclusion on their album "LP".
- Despite the massive success of the Friends theme, the duo expressed mixed feelings. While grateful for the exposure and royalties, they felt overshadowed by it and struggled to be recognized for their broader body of work.
- The duo briefly reunited in the late 2000s after an initial split, performing live and releasing new music before ultimately disbanding permanently in 2020.
- Their band name was chosen as a tongue-in-cheek contrast to the perceived seriousness of Dutch Old Master painter Rembrandt, reflecting their more accessible pop-rock style.
