William Henry Monk
English composer, organist, and influential music editor best known for creating the hymn tune 'Eventide' for 'Abide with Me'.Monk served as organist and choirmaster at St Matthias Church (Stoke Newington) and St Paul's Church (Hampstead). He was the inaugural musical editor of 'Hymns Ancient and Modern' (1861), shaping Victorian church music. As professor at King's College London and the National Training School for Music, he influenced generations of musicians. His compositions include over 80 hymn tunes and chants.
