Dexys Midnight Runners

English new wave/soul band formed in Birmingham, best known for their 1982 international hit "Come On Eileen".Formed by Kevin Rowland in Birmingham, England, 1978. Originally part of the 2 Tone ska revival scene before developing their distinctive soul-influenced sound and "tramp" look. Achieved massive global success with "Come On Eileen" in 1982. Known for intense performances, constant lineup changes driven by Rowland's perfectionism, and distinct musical phases (soul, Celtic folk). Disbanded in 1987, reformed in 2003, and have released new material sporadically since.
  • The band's original name, inspired by the stimulant Dexedrine (popular among Northern Soul all-nighters), was almost immediately shortened from "Dexys Midnight Runners" to just "Dexys" for their first album.
  • Kevin Rowland was notorious for his intense vision and perfectionism, leading to frequent, often acrimonious, lineup changes. The entire horn section famously quit during the recording of their debut album.
  • Their "tramp" look (donkey jackets, woolly hats, overalls) was a deliberate anti-rock star statement and became an iconic part of their early image.
  • After the massive success of "Come On Eileen" and the album "Too-Rye-Ay" (1982), Rowland drastically changed the band's sound and image for the next album "Don't Stand Me Down" (1985), alienating many fans and critics. The album is now considered a cult classic.
  • The band effectively dissolved after the commercial failure of "Don't Stand Me Down". Rowland pursued a solo career, including a controversial covers album and personal struggles.
  • Rowland reformed Dexys in 2003 with a significantly different lineup and sound. They have released new albums sporadically, including "One Day I'm Going to Soar" (2012) and "Let the Record Show: Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul" (2016), receiving critical acclaim.
