Dschinghis Khan

German disco group formed for the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest, famous for their energetic performances and oriental-themed hits.Created by producer Ralph Siegel and lyricist Bernd Meinunger specifically for Eurovision 1979. The original lineup included Steve Bender, Leslie Mandoki, Louis Hendrik Potgieter, Wolfgang Heichel, Edina Pop (Edna Prophet), and Henriette Heichel. • Their song 'Dschinghis Khan' was banned in the USSR over fears it mocked Mongolia, a Soviet ally, though it ironically became a hit in Mongolia itself years later.
  • Louis Potgieter died of AIDS-related complications in 1994. Lead singer Edina Pop passed away from lung cancer in 2010.
  • Unexpected popularity in Japan led to a 1980 Tokyo concert filmed for NHK, where fans memorized German lyrics phonetically.
  • The 2005 reunion began spontaneously after all surviving original members appeared on a German TV nostalgia show.
  • Controversially performed at a 1979 Rhodesian independence ceremony during the Bush War, later claiming they were unaware of the political context.
