Benny Hill

Benny Hill was an iconic English comedian, actor, singer, and composer, best known for his internationally successful television sketch show 'The Benny Hill Show'. While primarily celebrated for his slapstick comedy and visual gags, he also created memorable musical pieces.Born in Southampton, Hill began in variety shows and radio before finding massive TV success. His show, characterized by fast-paced sketches, visual humour, and chase scenes, ran internationally for decades. He composed several pieces used on his show, most famously the theme tune.
  • His most famous composition is the theme tune for his show, known as "Yakety Sax", though he didn't actually write the original "Yakety Sax" song (composed by Boots Randolph and James Rich). Hill's specific arrangement of it, played at breakneck speed during the show's iconic silent-movie style chase sequences, became indelibly linked to him.
  • Hill was intensely private, never married, and reportedly had difficulty forming lasting romantic relationships. He lived a relatively modest life despite his wealth.
  • His later years were marked by declining health and controversy over the perceived sexism in his show, leading to its cancellation by Thames Television in 1989. He died alone at home in Teddington, London, of a heart attack on April 20, 1992, shortly after the cancellation. His body was discovered several days later.
