Japanese-American singer-songwriter known for her emotionally raw lyrics, distinctive vocals, and exploration of themes like identity, alienation, love, and womanhood within indie rock and art pop frameworks.Born in Japan to an American father and Japanese mother, Mitski lived in numerous countries during her youth before settling in the US. She studied film scoring and composition at SUNY Purchase College. Her self-released early albums ("Lush" - 2012, "Retired from Sad, New Career in Business" - 2013) gained underground attention. Breakthrough came with "Bury Me at Makeout Creek" (2014) and "Puberty 2" (2016), critically acclaimed for their raw emotion. "Be the Cowboy" (2018) marked a significant commercial and critical leap, earning widespread praise. Following extensive touring, she announced a hiatus from performing in 2019. She returned with "Laurel Hell" in 2022 and "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We" in 2023, continuing her trajectory as a defining voice in contemporary indie music.

• Mitski moved frequently during her childhood, living in over a dozen countries including Turkey, China, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo due to her father's job with the US State Department.
• In 2019, after a period of intense touring, Mitski announced she was taking an indefinite hiatus from performing live, citing the emotional and physical toll, stating "I’m just a human".
