Pixies

Pixies are an iconic American alternative rock band, renowned for their loud-quiet dynamics, surreal lyrics, and immense influence on the 1990s alternative music explosion.Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986 by Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals), and David Lovering (drums). Released four highly influential studio albums between 1987 and 1991: 'Come On Pilgrim', 'Surfer Rosa', 'Doolittle', and 'Bossanova'. Broke up acrimoniously in 1993. Reunited in 2004 and have continued to tour and release new music since, albeit with lineup changes including Kim Deal's departure in 2013.
  • Internal tensions, particularly between Black Francis and Kim Deal over creative control, were a major factor in the band's initial 1993 breakup.
  • Despite modest commercial success during their initial run, their influence was colossal. Kurt Cobain famously cited Pixies as a primary inspiration for Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' sound.
  • Kim Deal formed the successful band The Breeders while still in Pixies. Her replacement after the 2013 split was initially Kim Shattuck (The Muffs), then later Paz Lenchantin (A Perfect Circle, Zwan), who became a full member.
  • The reunion in 2004 was initially just for touring, but overwhelming demand led them to continue. They eventually began writing and recording new material, releasing 'Indie Cindy' (2014), 'Head Carrier' (2016), and 'Beneath the Eyrie' (2019).
  • The band cultivated an enigmatic image, rarely giving interviews in their early years and letting their intense live performances and cryptic lyrics speak for themselves.
