Composed by ragtime pioneer Artie Matthews for Stark's 1915 competition, this piano work defied contemporary styles with its minimal syncopation and early boogie-woogie elements. It won prizes while intentionally challenging the popularity of Handy's "St. Louis Blues". Its rhythmic innovations predated the boogie-woogie craze by over a decade.
