Georges Bizet - L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2: Menuet

Georges Bizet's "L'Arlésienne" refers to two distinct works: the incidental music he composed for Alphonse Daudet's play of the same name and the suite he later extracted from that music.

  1. Background: Bizet composed the incidental music for "L'Arlésienne" in 1872, as a commission for the play by Daudet. Unfortunately, the play was not well-received, but Bizet's music has endured and gained popularity.

  2. Suite No. 1 and No. 2: After Bizet's death, his friend Ernest Guiraud arranged and selected portions of the original score to create two suites. Suite No. 1 and No. 2 are often performed today, showcasing some of the most memorable and vibrant sections of the music.

  3. Popular Movements: The suite includes popular movements such as the "Farandole," a lively and rhythmic dance, and the "Adagietto," a beautiful and melancholic piece.

  4. Bizet's Tragic End: Unfortunately, Bizet did not live to see the success of his "L'Arlésienne" music. He passed away in 1875, just three months after the play's premiere and before the suites were created.

  5. Legacy: Despite the initial failure of the play, Bizet's music from "L'Arlésienne" has become a beloved part of the classical repertoire. The expressive melodies and vibrant orchestrations contribute to its enduring popularity.
