What Ukrainian folk chant inspired this world-famous Christmas carol? Learn!
"Carol of the Bells" is a popular Christmas carol composed by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1914. The music is based on the Ukrainian folk chant "Shchedryk" which tells the story of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the plentiful year that will come. The original folk melody was adapted by Leontovych with his own arrangement, creating the distinctive four-note ostinato motif that is now recognized worldwide. The English lyrics, written by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936, are copyright-protected, but the underlying musical composition by Leontovych is in the public domain in most of the world.
