"The Girl from Ipanema" is one of the most recorded songs of all time and a global symbol of Brazilian bossa nova. Composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes, it was inspired by Helô Pinheiro, a young woman who would pass by the Veloso bar (now Garota de Ipanema) in the Ipanema neighborhood. The 1964 English version sung by Astrud Gilberto with Stan Getz's saxophone became a worldwide hit, winning a Grammy and helping to popularize Brazilian music internationally. Its cool, relaxed rhythm epitomizes the bossa nova style.
