Why did Brahms' Hungarian Dances cause a stir about their authenticity? Learn!
The Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based on Hungarian themes. Completed in 1869 for piano four hands, they were among Brahms' most profitable works. Interestingly, they sparked some controversy: while immensely popular, they were criticized by some Hungarian musicians for not being authentic folk tunes but rather Brahms' own compositions inspired by the Romani (Gypsy) style popular in Vienna's cafes. Despite this, they remain beloved concert staples, showcasing Brahms' mastery of rhythm and melody.
