Who's behind the notes? Discover Johann Sebastian Bach: Master of Baroque Music
Bach's cantata BWV 171 "Gott, wie dein Name, so ist auch dein Ruhm" was composed for New Year's Day in Leipzig. The work showcases Bach's masterful counterpoint, particularly in the opening chorus which he later reworked into the "Patrem omnipotentem" section of his Mass in B minor. The final chorale "Laß uns das Jahr vollbringen" is a beautiful setting of a melody by Johannes Hermann, representing the culmination of the cantata's spiritual journey from praise to prayer.
