Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion, BWV 245, is a sacred oratorio first performed in 1724 during Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig. It depicts the Passion of Jesus as told in the Gospel of John, chapters 18 and 19. The work is structured in two parts and includes chorales, recitatives, arias, and choruses. Unlike the St Matthew Passion, it is more directly dramatic and concise. The text is based on Martin Luther's German translation of the Gospel, with additional poetry by Christian Friedrich Henrici (known as Picander) and stanzas from hymns.
