Smutna opowieść (A Sad Story), Op. 13, is a symphonic poem by Mieczysław Karłowicz, one of Poland's most important late-Romantic composers. Completed in 1908, it reflects Karłowicz's characteristically melancholic and introspective style. The work is part of his cycle of six symphonic poems that established him as a master of the form. Karłowicz's music is known for its rich orchestration and emotional depth, influenced by German late-Romanticism but with a distinct Polish character. Tragically, Karłowicz died in an avalanche in 1909 at the age of 32, cutting short a promising career.
