The "Horst-Wessel-Lied" (Horst Wessel Song), also known by its opening line "Die Fahne hoch" (Raise the Flag), was the anthem of the Nazi Party from 1930 to 1945. The lyrics were written by Horst Wessel, a SA stormtrooper who was murdered in 1930 and was subsequently glorified as a martyr by the Nazi propaganda machine. The melody is widely believed to have been borrowed from a traditional folk song or a popular song of the time. After World War II, the song was banned in Germany and Austria, and its use is now prohibited by law in those countries as a symbol of unconstitutional organizations.
