"Nothing Else Matters" is a power ballad by the American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released in 1992 as the third single from their self-titled fifth album. The song, written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, is one of Metallica's most famous and recognizable songs. Unlike most Metallica songs, it features a more melodic sound and was Hetfield's first attempt at writing a love song, dedicated to his then-girlfriend. The distinctive opening arpeggio is played with the index finger on the first string and the ring and pinky fingers on the second and third strings, while the thumb plays the bass notes, creating its signature sound.
