"Il Canto degli Italiani," written by Goffredo Mameli and composed by Michele Novaro in 1847, became a symbol of Italian unification. Though informally used for decades, it was officially recognized as Italy's national anthem only in 1946 (post-monarchy) and reaffirmed in 2005.
