The "Marcha Real" is one of the few national anthems in the world that has never had official lyrics adopted for common use. Its melody is centuries old, first appearing in a document dated 1761 and designated as the official anthem by King Carlos III in 1770. The anthem has had various sets of lyrics throughout its history, but political disagreements have prevented the adoption of official words in recent decades, making it an instrumental piece by default.
