Johann Sebastian Bach - Aria variata in A minor, BWV 989: 2 Practice-Ready Scores

A set of 10 variations showcasing Bach's early mastery of thematic development, originally for keyboard.
The Aria variata in A minor, BWV 989, is an early work by Johann Sebastian Bach, showcasing his mastery of variation form even in his youth. Composed around 1709, it features a simple, chorale-like theme followed by ten virtuosic variations. While less complex than the later Goldberg Variations, it shares key structural elements: variations based on the harmonic progression rather than the melody itself and the return of the aria at the conclusion. The work exhibits the young Bach's flamboyant keyboard style and his absorption of Italian musical influences, as hinted at in its alternative title "Alla Maniera Italiana".
