This minuet from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach was long attributed to J.S. Bach but is now believed by scholars to be composed by Christian Petzold. It remains one of the most recognizable Baroque melodies in pedagogical piano literature.

Both works reference Isaiah 40:3–4 (“Prepare the way of the Lord”), but Bach’s cantata focuses on Advent themes and John the Baptist’s testimony, while Handel’s Messiah expands into a broader Christological narrative.
