Who's behind the notes? Discover Giuseppe Verdi: The Titan of Italian Opera
Rigoletto is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the play Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo. It premiered in 1851 in Venice. The opera was initially controversial due to its depiction of a corrupt ruler and its tragic storyline, which led to censorship issues. Despite this, it quickly became a huge success and is considered a masterpiece of the operatic repertoire, featuring famous arias like "La donna è mobile" and "Caro nome". The excerpt "Oh tu che la festa audace hai turbato" is a choral part from Act 1.
