How did Mertz's near-fatal illness influence the composition of his renowned Bardenklänge series? Learn!
Johann Kaspar Mertz's Bardenklänge, Op.13 is a collection of 30 pieces published in 15 books, representing some of the most important works in the romantic guitar repertoire. The Etude from Book 3 demonstrates Mertz's pianistic approach to guitar composition, influenced by the styles of Chopin, Mendelssohn, and Schumann. Mertz developed his distinctive sound after recovering from a nearly fatal strychnine overdose in 1846, during which he was nursed by his pianist wife Josephine Plantin. The Bardenklänge pieces reflect this romantic pianistic influence, featuring expressive melodies and sophisticated harmonies that expanded the technical and musical possibilities of the guitar.
