Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika is a hymn originally composed as a song by Enoch Sontonga in 1897. It became a pan-African liberation anthem and was later incorporated into the national anthem of South Africa. The song was first performed at the ordination of a Methodist minister and quickly spread throughout southern Africa, becoming a symbol of resistance against apartheid.
"Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" was originally a Xhosa hymn by Enoch Sontonga, later combined with C.J. Langenhoven's Afrikaans poem "Die Stem van Suid-Afrika" to form South Africa's post-apartheid national anthem in 1997.
